Kavaratti Island

Kavaratti Island

Kavaratti is the capital of Lakshadweep — home to the territory's finest mosque, a world-class marine aquarium, turtle hatchery, and the beating heart of island administration.

Kavaratti is the administrative capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed island in the territory, with government offices, a hospital, and the main port of the archipelago. While it lacks the pristine isolation of Bangaram or the dive credentials of Kadmat, Kavaratti offers a unique perspective: the only island where visitors can see the machinery of island governance, visit the finest mosque architecture in Lakshadweep, observe the territory’s marine research station, and see live sea turtles at the government hatchery. The Marine Aquarium at Kavaratti is considered one of the best in India, displaying the full range of reef species found in the territory.
